NavPrakriti to set up critical minerals refining facility in Odisha

NavPrakriti is set to expand its footprint in India’s battery recycling sector with plans to invest over Rs 1,000 crore in a greenfield critical minerals refining facility in Odisha. The proposed project is aimed at strengthening domestic capabilities in recovering key materials essential for next-generation energy storage systems.

The facility, expected to be commissioned by the financial year 2029, will have the capacity to process around 5,000 tonnes of end-of-life batteries annually. It will focus on extracting and refining critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, enabling high-purity recovery and reducing reliance on imports. The project aligns with the broader objectives of the National Critical Mineral Mission, under which the company has qualified for support.

This expansion comes at a time when demand for lithium-ion batteries is accelerating, driven by the rapid adoption of electric mobility and the scaling up of renewable energy storage solutions. The Odisha plant will complement NavPrakriti’s existing recycling facility in Serampore, which currently handles 12,000 ton annually and has the potential to scale up further.

In addition to infrastructure development, the company is also focusing on ecosystem building. Plans include partnerships with more than 150 battery manufacturers and investments in research collaborations aimed at improving recycling technologies. The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of a circular economy for battery materials, supporting long-term sustainability in India’s energy transition.
