In a major push to strengthen the country’s railway infrastructure, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared three large-scale railway capacity expansion projects with a combined investment of Rs 23,437 crore.
The approved projects, to be executed by Indian Railways, will add nearly 901 km of new railway lines across 19 districts in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The projects include the third and fourth railway lines on the Nagda–Mathura, Guntakal–Wadi, and Burhwal–Sitapur routes, all of which are considered high-density corridors with substantial passenger and freight traffic.
Developed under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the projects are intended to improve multi-modal transportation integration and enhance logistics efficiency through coordinated infrastructure planning.
The addition of multi-tracking infrastructure is expected to ease congestion on heavily utilised routes, accelerate train operations, and improve the movement of both passengers and cargo across regions. The upgraded network will also strengthen connectivity to important religious and tourist destinations, including Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ranthambore National Park, Mathura, and Vrindavan.
The projects are expected to play a significant role in boosting operational efficiency, supporting economic activity, and enhancing the overall capacity of India’s rail transport network.
