ONGC and bp expand technical partnership to enhance Western Offshore production

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has entered into a new Technical Services Contract (TSC) with global energy major bp to strengthen hydrocarbon production from its Western Offshore Basin, reinforcing efforts to improve output from India’s mature offshore oil and gas assets. The agreement builds on the companies’ earlier collaboration at Mumbai High and represents another step towards enhancing domestic energy production through advanced technology and operational expertise.

Under the contract, bp will serve as the Technical Services Provider, supporting ONGC with global best practices, advanced engineering solutions and production optimisation technologies. The collaboration will focus on improving reservoir management, enhancing well productivity, strengthening production surveillance and increasing the efficiency of offshore production facilities. ONGC will continue to retain full ownership and operational control of all assets while jointly implementing production enhancement initiatives with bp’s multidisciplinary technical teams.

The Western Offshore Basin, comprising 43 producing blocks, has been the backbone of India’s offshore hydrocarbon production for more than four decades and continues to contribute significantly to the country’s crude oil and natural gas output. Through targeted technical interventions, the partnership aims to arrest the natural decline in production from ageing fields, improve hydrocarbon recovery and maximise the performance of existing infrastructure.

The commercial structure provides for a fixed service fee during the initial phase of the contract, after which bp’s remuneration will be linked to incremental hydrocarbon production achieved through the joint programme. Building on the encouraging outcomes of the Mumbai High collaboration, the expanded partnership is expected to improve operational efficiency, support long-term production growth and contribute to India’s broader objective of strengthening domestic energy security.
