The Maharashtra Government has decided to set up another entity called the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC), to undertake road construction and repair works in the state. Currently, it has two agencies, including the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) for the same. The agency, which has been set up with an authorised capital of Rs 100 crore, will report to the PWD. Its main task will be to ensure that the roads in the state are maintained and are pothole-free.
The corporation can also work in states other than Maharashtra on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. As per reports, Maharashtra has an extensive network of roads of about three lakh km. The agency can also collect duties, surplus charges and betterment charges for the maintenance and repairs of roads in the State, along with raising funds through monetising the assets of PWD.
