BMC allocates funds to build six new bridges

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to build six new bridges in the western suburbs and has allocated Rs 961.50 crore for it. The amount is part of Rs 18,750 crore earmarked by BMC for various developmental projects to be executed in FY22. The civil body will also look at repairs, maintenance and reconstruction of several other bridges and flyovers in the city. In all, 344 bridges are maintained by BMC, including flyovers and rail-over-bridges (ROBs). The work of demolition and reconstruction of 21 big and small bridges has been completed. Apart from this, major repairs on four bridges and minor repairs on 144 bridges are in progress, with 60 per cent of work being completed. The work on seven bridges in western suburbs is underway on design built transfer (DBT) basis, and 40 per cent of work has been finished. The Central Railway and the Western Railway have proposed to carry out reconstruction of ROBs through the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDCL), after carrying out structural audit through IIT-Bombay. Accordingly, 11 ROBs and one road under bridge (RUB) are proposed to be reconstructed through MRIDCL.
