The Central Government has set in motion plans to enhance capacity on the Konkan Railway Corporation corridor, with a detailed project report currently being prepared for approximately 263 km of track doubling.
The development reflects a broader push to improve operational efficiency and throughput on the strategically important coastal route linking Roha in Maharashtra to Thokur in Karnataka, spanning nearly 740 km. The proposed upgrade is expected to address long-standing capacity constraints, improve train speeds, and enable smoother movement of both passenger and freight traffic.
Initial progress has already been achieved, with about 55 km of doubling completed across key stretches such as Roha–Veer and Madgaon–Majorda. However, a significant portion of the route remains to be upgraded, requiring substantial capital investment and coordinated participation from stakeholder states.
Given that the Konkan Railway Corporation operates under a shared equity model involving Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, and Kerala, further expansion plans will depend on collaborative financial support. The Centre has also indicated that any structural move, including a potential merger with Indian Railways, would require consensus among all participating states, underlining the cooperative framework governing the corridor’s future development.
