Andhra Pradesh has taken a major step in strengthening its aviation infrastructure with the inauguration of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district. Developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the project represents the state’s first greenfield international airport since its bifurcation in 2014.
Constructed with an investment of over Rs 5,640 crore, the airport has been designed to accommodate six million passengers annually in its first phase. The new facility is expected to significantly enhance air connectivity across north Andhra Pradesh while supporting tourism, trade, investment and broader regional economic development.
The inauguration was accompanied by the launch and foundation laying of infrastructure projects valued at approximately Rs 17,900 crore, spanning sectors such as transportation, manufacturing and industrial development. Among the notable initiatives announced was a semiconductor manufacturing project in Visakhapatnam, alongside key highway developments aimed at improving regional connectivity.
The state government also reaffirmed its infrastructure roadmap, indicating that the Polavaram Project is targeted for completion in 2027, while the first phase of Amaravati is expected to be ready by 2028. The new international airport is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting these long-term development plans by strengthening the state’s logistics network and improving access to emerging economic hubs.
