Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has sanctioned projects exceeding Rs 12,000 crore aimed at accelerating the city’s Metro development and enhancing integrated transit systems.
This major approval—finalised during the Authority’s 284th Executive Committee meeting—covers a wide range of work, including system integration, rolling stock procurement, civil works, traction power supply, digital command and monitoring solutions, and multi-modal connectivity initiatives.
A total of 19 large-scale contracts were cleared, reinforcing MMRDA’s commitment to seamless urban mobility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Among the major beneficiaries of this development is Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T), which secured the largest contract—worth approximately Rs 4,788 crore—for Metro Line 4 and 4A. The package includes supply and installation of signalling systems, telecom equipment, platform screen doors, depot apparatus, and a five-year maintenance mandate. Additionally, L&T bagged a separate Rs 188.59-crore order for track laying work on the same corridor.
NCC Ltd emerged as the second-biggest contractor with a Rs 2,269.66 crore package for Metro Line 6. Their scope involves supply of rolling stock, telecom systems, and depot machinery. IRCON International Ltd was awarded a Rs 668.15 crore deal to deliver traction and electrical & mechanical (E&M) systems for the same line.
These strategic contracts mark a critical step forward in the city’s efforts to expand its Metro network and improve last-mile connectivity, all while easing the pressure on road traffic and existing public transport options.
