NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for the formation of a joint venture company aimed at developing nuclear power projects across the country.
The agreement was signed by senior representatives of both organisations in the presence of top management officials, marking a strategic step towards strengthening India’s clean and reliable energy infrastructure.
As part of the collaboration, the proposed joint venture will focus on developing 700 MW Indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR)-based nuclear power plants along with other advanced reactor technologies of mutually agreed capacities. The partnership will also evaluate opportunities for investment in NPCIL’s existing and upcoming 700 MW PHWR projects.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader objective of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, supporting the nation’s long-term energy security and decarbonisation goals.
NLCIL stated that the partnership gains importance in the backdrop of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill enacted in December 2025, which seeks to modernise the regulatory and policy ecosystem for the nuclear sector.
Traditionally known for its presence in thermal power and mining, NLCIL has been actively diversifying its portfolio into renewable and sustainable energy segments such as solar, wind, pumped hydro storage, battery energy storage systems, green hydrogen, and waste-to-energy projects.
NPCIL, on the other hand, continues to play a central role in India’s nuclear energy programme through the design, construction, and operation of nuclear power plants nationwide.
The collaboration is expected to combine NLCIL’s operational expertise in the power sector with NPCIL’s specialised capabilities in nuclear technology, contributing to dependable base-load power generation and accelerating the country’s transition towards a cleaner energy mix.
