UltraTech Cement accelerates green mobility with electric trucks and charging stations

K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable practices, UltraTech Cement Ltd, India’s leading cement and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) company, has unveiled a fleet of five electric trucks dedicated to transporting clinker. This initiative, spearheaded by the company’s commitment to environmentally friendly operations, is set to significantly reduce transport emissions and pave the way for a greener future.

The electric trucks will operate between UltraTech’s integrated cement manufacturing unit, Dhar Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh, and its grinding unit, Dhule Cement Works in Maharashtra. To ensure a seamless and reliable transition to electric transport, the company has strategically installed three charging stations. One charging station is located at each manufacturing unit, and an additional station is conveniently situated en route.

The implementation of electric trucks is projected to curtail transport emissions by an estimated 680 MT of CO2 annually, underscoring UltraTech’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint. K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement Ltd, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “At UltraTech, we are committed to driving sustainability across the value chain of our operations. The successful pilot of electric trucks, in addition to the CNG and LNG trucks already deployed in our operations, is a significant step in our efforts to enable ‘green mobility’.”

UltraTech has set ambitious targets aligned with the Government of India’s eFAST initiative, aiming to deploy 500 electric trucks and add 1,000 CNG/LNG vehicles in its operations by June 2025. This commitment demonstrates the company’s proactive role in championing eco-friendly solutions within the cement industry. In collaboration with logistics partners, UltraTech has already made strides in ‘Green Logistics,’ introducing CNG vehicles in 2021 and LNG vehicles in 2022.

As a trailblazer in the cement industry, UltraTech continues to lead the charge towards sustainable practices, fostering a greener and more environmentally responsible future for the construction and manufacturing sectors.
