V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) has entered into a strategic partnership with Germany-based H2Global to explore new frameworks for promoting the production, trade and export of clean fuels, marking a significant development in India’s green energy and maritime sectors.
The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between VOCPA, the H2Global Foundation and Hintco GmbH, is aimed at assessing opportunities for establishing international green fuel trade corridors and strengthening clean shipping initiatives.
As part of the agreement, the organisations will evaluate the feasibility of introducing auction-based mechanisms, including double-auction models, to facilitate the movement of clean fuels through the port ecosystem. The initiative will also examine how port infrastructure can support the production, storage, handling and export of green fuels while enabling efficient integration with global supply chains.
The partnership will focus on key areas such as logistics planning, bunkering facilities, fuel certification systems, transportation networks, market development and safety protocols associated with green hydrogen derivatives. Green ammonia, green methanol and other sustainable fuel alternatives are expected to be central to the study.
In addition, the collaboration seeks to bring together stakeholders across the value chain, including government bodies, industry players, infrastructure operators, shipping companies, financial institutions and potential buyers. The engagement is expected to contribute towards the development of a comprehensive roadmap for green fuel exports from India to Germany and other European destinations.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader energy transition objectives and supports efforts to establish robust export infrastructure for green hydrogen derivatives. It is also expected to enhance the role of Indian ports in the emerging global clean fuels market while contributing to long-term energy security, industrial growth and decarbonisation goals.
