Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a combined Rs 1.5 lakh crore infrastructure investment by the state and Centre over the next few years, aimed at accelerating development and helping transform Assam into a developed state by 2047.
Speaking at the Independence Day celebrations in Guwahati, Sarma announced that the Assam government will commit Rs 50,000 crore towards improving basic infrastructure and facilities across rural and urban areas. The state will also seek an additional Rs 1 lakh crore from the Centre over the next five years for infrastructure development.
The proposed investment is expected to support Assam’s broader development agenda, with infrastructure identified as a key driver of economic growth and improved public services.
Eight New Co-Districts Announced
The Chief Minister also announced the creation of eight additional co-districts to improve administrative efficiency. The new co-districts are Khumtai, Kamalpur, Barhampur, Ronganodi, Sisiborgaon, Chabua-Lahowal, Katigorah and Borkhola.
The government has previously announced plans for a total of 78 co-districts across Assam.
Focus on Flood Rehabilitation and Land Protection
Sarma said funding would not be a constraint in providing permanent rehabilitation for people affected by the state’s devastating floods, which have claimed more than 100 lives and displaced thousands.
The government also plans to restrict the buying and selling of land in 40 revenue circles to people who have resided in Assam continuously for at least three generations, with the stated objective of protecting indigenous communities and their land rights.
The announcements form part of Assam’s longer-term development strategy, aligned with the national goal of building a developed India by 2047.
