The Maharashtra Government has approved four major highway projects across the Vidarbha region, covering a combined length of 547 km with an estimated overall investment of Rs 51,906 crore. The projects, to be executed by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, are targeted for completion between September and December 2028.
The decision was taken during a state infrastructure committee meeting chaired by Devendra Fadnavis, where officials were directed to accelerate land acquisition and ensure timely execution of all road works. Alongside the highway approvals, the state also initiated a feasibility study for a proposed tunnel corridor connecting western Maharashtra with the Konkan region.
Among the approved corridors, the Nagpur–Chandrapur highway will be the largest, stretching 204.79 km through nine talukas in Nagpur and Chandrapur districts. The four-lane access-controlled route will feature seven interchanges and require acquisition of more than 2,159 hectares of land.
The Nagpur–Gondia highway, spanning 162.37 km, will pass through Nagpur, Bhandara and Gondia districts. Planned as a six-lane corridor, the project includes nine interchanges and is expected to require nearly 1,634 hectares of land.
Another significant project, the Bhandara–Gadchiroli highway, will extend 94.24 km across Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli districts. The six-lane road will incorporate six interchanges and involve acquisition of around 1,185 hectares.
The fourth project, connecting Navegaon More-Konsari to Surjagad, will cover 85.76 km through parts of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts. The proposed four-lane road is expected to play a crucial role in supporting mineral transportation from the region. The state has also proposed linking this corridor with the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway to strengthen freight connectivity.
Of the total approved outlay, approximately Rs 32,478 crore has been earmarked for construction activities, while the remaining amount will be utilised for land acquisition, utility shifting and other associated infrastructure requirements.
