The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved a Rs 334.89 crore project to construct an internal flyover at Visakhapatnam Port Authority, with the objective of improving cargo evacuation, reducing traffic congestion and enabling smoother movement within the port complex.

The project involves a 3.584-km elevated road corridor between Convent Junction and the Dock Area. The proposed infrastructure will separate road and rail movement within the port and is expected to address delays caused by frequent railway level-crossing closures.

Nine major railway crossings currently experience around 18 gate closures each day due to the high volume of train movements. These interruptions affect the movement of trucks and other vehicles, resulting in longer waiting periods, higher fuel consumption and increased operating costs. The elevated corridor is intended to reduce these road-rail conflicts and improve the efficiency of cargo transportation.

The project will include civil and electrical works, shifting of utilities, safety-related installations and five years of subsequent maintenance. Construction will be planned to minimise interference with regular port operations, particularly in critical dock areas.

The project is scheduled for completion within 30 months from the commencement of work. Once operational, the corridor is expected to strengthen internal connectivity and improve the movement of cargo between key areas of the port.

The investment forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure development and integrated logistics planning under the PM GatiShakti framework. Improved internal connectivity at Visakhapatnam Port is also expected to support its position within India’s maritime logistics network and contribute to more efficient cargo handling and evacuation.

The project is being positioned as part of ongoing efforts to modernise India’s port infrastructure and enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of the country’s maritime trade ecosystem.
