India’s rail manufacturing capabilities received a major boost with the foundation stone laying of BEML’s Greenfield Rail Manufacturing Facility, BRAHMA – BEML Rail Hub for Advanced Manufacturing, at Umaria near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The inauguration ceremony was led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in the presence of senior central and state leaders, industry officials, and dignitaries.
Planned as a world-class production hub, BRAHMA spans 60 hectare (148 acre) and involves an investment of Rs 1,800 crore. The facility is designed to produce advanced rolling stock, including next-generation Vande Bharat trainsets, Amrit Bharat coaches, metro and rapid rail coaches, and high-speed rail stock. Initial capacity is projected at 125–200 coaches annually, with the goal of scaling up to 1,100 units within five years.
The project is expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, provide skill development opportunities for local youth, and stimulate industrial activity in surrounding districts such as Singrauli, Satna, Rewa, and Katni. It also aims to strengthen domestic supply chains and benefit MSMEs in the region.
In line with sustainable manufacturing practices, BRAHMA will incorporate renewable energy systems, zero liquid discharge processes, rainwater harvesting, and extensive green landscaping. Equipped with advanced design, engineering, and production technologies, the plant will position India as a stronger contender in the global rail manufacturing sector.
BEML’s new unit is being hailed as a cornerstone in the country’s Make in India, Make for the World mission, setting high benchmarks in quality, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
