Coolbrook, ABB partner for industrial-scale electrified heating system at Adani Cement plant

Coolbrook and ABB have entered the industrial delivery phase of their collaboration with the deployment of Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater™ (RDH™) at Adani Cement’s Boyareddypalli Integrated Cement Plant in Andhra Pradesh. The project marks the world’s first industrial-scale installation of the RDH technology in a cement manufacturing facility, representing a significant advancement in the decarbonization of high-temperature industrial processes.

Under the agreement, ABB will supply the complete electrical infrastructure for the project, including drives, motors, an e-house and other electrical components. These will be integrated with the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system (DCS) to ensure safe, reliable and high-performance operation of the RDH system. The deployment builds on several years of joint research, development and industrial validation between the two companies.

The initiative comes as cement manufacturers increasingly explore electrification to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and meet evolving climate targets. Coolbrook’s RDH technology generates high-temperature heat using electricity and will be used to dry and improve the heating value of alternative fuels during the cement calcination process. By enabling a greater share of renewable and waste-derived fuels in place of conventional fossil fuels, the system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 60,000 tonnes annually, with further reductions possible as renewable electricity adoption increases.

“Cement production is entering a decisive phase in its electrification journey,” said Joonas Rauramo, CEO, Coolbrook. “After years of development and industrial validation, attention is now focused on delivering projects at scale. As producers intensify efforts to cut emissions while maintaining operational reliability, scalable electrification solutions are becoming central to long-term investment decisions. ABB brings deep expertise in electrification systems and global execution capability, ensuring reliability, safety, and performance standards that heavy industry demands.”

“Decarbonizing process industries, including cement, requires close partnership, scalable technology solutions and a pioneering spirit,” said Joachim Braun, President, ABB’s Process Industries division. “Supporting Coolbrook in the operational delivery of this first-of-its-kind industrial-scale installation is an important milestone. By providing the systems that enable high-temperature electrification in cement production, we are enabling industrial customers to reduce emissions while meeting their performance and productivity targets.”
