Nearly 50000 km of National Highways added in 9 years

According to official data, around 50,000km of National Highways have been added in the last nine years. In 2014-15, India has a total of 97,830 km of National Highways, which has increased to 145,155 km by March 2023. The road network in India is the second largest in the world, measuring roughly around 63.73 lakh metre. Earlier, the Government of India has undertaken several efforts to increase the capacity of the country’s national highway Infrastructure.

Due to the systematic push through the corridor-based National Highway development approach, the speed of National Highway building has increased consistently between 2014-15 and 2021-22. The rate of NH building was around 12 km/day in 2014-15, but it grew to about 29 km/day in 2021-22. The 1,386-kilometre-long Delhi-Mumbai expressway, the Bharatmala Pariyojana is India’s largest expressway being constructed by PM Modi.
